Cleansing

Traveled for a week. This is what we came home to…

I live in a dirty place.  You can’t imagine the dirt I deal with on a daily basis.  When it “rains” it’s really just mud drops falling from the sky.

And I walk most places. (Traffic is horrific in this mega-city, so it’s usually faster just to walk.) Through dirt, dust and weird mud puddles created by someone’s cleaning buckets. And all this in sandals because it’s crazy hot.

Every part of me that is exposed to the air get really gross. My feet are coated in grime. My hands and face are gritty. For this extra clean girl it’s a nightmare.

So I wash. Continually. Went on a quick trip to the grocery store? Immediately after putting the groceries away (or at least the perishables) I wash my hands, feet and face. When I return from visiting a friend I wash my hands, feet and face. Over and over I wash so that I’ll feel clean. (Notice how I said “feel.” After all, I’m still wearing the grimy clothes.)

Some airlines…

20140716-152928-55768421.jpg

My husband and I travel a lot. At least we think four continents in four weeks is more than average.

For this travel we spend a significant portion of our lives flying on various airlines. We try to stick with one major airline partnership (miles add up to trips home!), but even so there are lots of airlines going lots of places.

Here are some of our observations:

Some airlines serve hot rolls throughout their transatlantic flight.
Some airlines serve canned peas and carrots in mayonnaise.

My Temple

image

God loves me just as I am. This is an undeniable truth. He loves me even though I can be controlling. He loves the dark recesses of my heart. He loves me no matter what.

He also loves me enough not to leave me that way.

Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 2 Corinthians 5:17

There are countless verses about being holy and pure (list some here). And for first century Christians dealing with temple prostitutes and all manner of atrocities, that makes sense. And I find myself skimming over those verses. I don’t struggle with that so I’m good.

But am I?

Isn’t at the core of impurity the desire to control? “I’m doing this regardless of the consequences.” Or, “is this really that bad?”

For me the issue may not be sexual impurity, but I do have my own idol I deal with: food.

I’m having a rotten day? Eat chocolate. I’ve miraculously accomplished everything on my to do list? I deserve a sweet treat. It’s hot outside? Eat something yummy. Besides, it’s no big deal right?

I am the queen of justifications for little things.

Jerry Sittser in his book, The Will of God as a Way of Lifebelieves that it is not the big decisions that truly matter, but the small, seemingly mundane day to day choices we make that determine the course for our life.

Ouch.

My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit! How dare I fill it with junk!

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:27

Now don’t misunderstand me, I could easily swing the other way and be one the pharisaical food nazi bringing condemnation on anyone with a twix bar.

So, there must be balance in this, too.

But what does this look like? I have no idea. But I’m on a journey to find out.

What does this look like for you?

Dominion Over Everything, Even Food

20140512-074541.jpg

Usually this scripture is used to talk about having lots of children. So it’s one I avoid reading since having biological children will only be possible through a true miracle of God.

But I do believe that scripture holds meaning for us. And God shined a different light on this passage for me. I hope it blesses and challenges you as it does me.

“Let us make man in Our image.” God made me in his image. I was made like God – not God, but like him. He is beautiful. And because I am made in his image, I am beautiful. Even the dorky parts of me.

Creation implies purpose. I have a reason for being. I was made to bring glory to God.

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18 NASB)

I am the glory of God.

Me, who likes to “dance” around the house and watch Anne of Green Gables.

But what does it mean to be the glory of God?

Be fruitful…. Be productive and successful.

For me, this means working hard on my projects for work. It means constantly and continually studying Arabic. It means digging into the scripture and spending extravagant time with Jesus. Put your trust in the Lord your God and you will be established. Put your trust in His prophets and succeed.” (2 Chronicles 20:20 NASB)

…multiply… Grow and increase.

I must continually grow in the Sprit and as a person. I am never done learning. I grow as a Christ follower and as someone who shares Jesus with Muslims. It also means that I grow in my marriage and as a wife. A wise man will hear and increase in learning, And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel, (Proverbs 1:5 NASB)

…fill the earth… Enlarge my territory and influence.

This speaks to making Arab friends in my life. The more Arab friends I have, the greater my influence for the sake of the glory of God. The more Arab friends I have, the more I can lead on the path of Truth. Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1 NASB)

…subdue… Conquer, overcome

I can conquer my sugar cravings and desire for food that isn’t healthy. I can overcome the idol of pride in my life. I can subdue my fear and share the Truth even when it’s hard. I can remember that even Islam is under Jesus’ feet. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13 NASB)

…and rule…. Complete control under Jesus.

Jesus is all-powerful. I can allow him to rule over every area of my life. Even my food choices. Even my thoughts. but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:57 NASB)

What a beautiful truth. I am God’s glory created to be productive, to grow, to have influence, to overcome because of the the complete dominion of Jesus.

What is God asking you to do?
